Psychic, ‘lottery’ are latest scams

"BBB Scambusters" is a consumer advice column from the Northeastern Indiana Better Business Bureau. It appears twice a month in Business Monday.

♦Miss Elizabeth, Psychic, is sending letters to Hoosiers guaranteeing her services: "Every prophecy I reveal shall be 100% accurate. You will experience instant miracles. I will solve any problem in 36 hours. Your every prayer will be answered, your every wish granted, your every problem solved." Miss Elizabeth guarantees a 100 percent refund if not satisfied and claims to be "the world's most powerful spiritual and psychic adviser." She has the bureau's lowest rating.

♦Maximizer Health Products is advertising on TV offering a free week trial of their ExtenZe male enhancement product. When an Indianapolis woman ordered the product, she was asked for her bank account number to pay the $5.95 shipping and handling.

Psych Job, Part 2

The woman wanted advice to help bring up sales at her realty firm, but she wound up losing more than $3,000, terrified that her daughter and husband were in mortal danger.

The 43-year-old mother and native of Colombia, who asked that she not be named because of a combination of fear and embarrassment, appears to be the latest victim of HarperCollins author Regina Milbourne, whose supposedly nonfiction book Miami Psychic is still on the shelves despite the revelation that it is essentially a fraud.

The victim, whom I'll call Patricia, filed a complaint last week with the Plantation Police Department against Milbourne. She says the fact that the author, whom police describe as a classic scam artist, had just released a well-publicized book made her believe in the self-proclaimed psychic more than anything else.
